Our story
We are The Baked Bean Charity, and we do things a little differently around here…
For nearly 30 years, we’ve been creating spaces where adults with learning disabilities can discover their creativity and feel part of a community. We are mad about Drama, Dance, Zumba, DJing, Arts and Crafts and so much more, with classes designed to inspire empowerment, connection, self-expression and independence.
Above all, we’re brilliant at putting people, and their needs, centre stage. We challenge society on their old school views with what people can and can’t do, because why shouldn’t the next great performer or artist be someone with a learning disability?
What began in 1997 has grown into a vibrant community of over 200 students, supported by an incredible staff team across 20 different classes. But while we’ve grown, our purpose has always remained the same: to create opportunities, turn up the volume on people’s voices and challenge the world to think a little differently.
But why ‘baked beans’, you ask?
That’s easy. Because of Heinz 57, of course!
We like the idea of the ’57 Varieties slogan’ emulating how there are so many different versions of learning disabilities and how we should embrace our differences and flaunt them in whatever we do.
